Within cities, tuk-tuks and ride-hailing (PickMe, Uber) fill the gaps, as there is no metro. Trains and buses are cheap; Colombo and Kandy centres are walkable but traffic-heavy.

Tourism Visa Note
As of a policy change effective 25 May 2026, this ETA is now FREE for a 30-day stay for nationals of a specific list of ~40 countries (including CAN/USA/UK and most EU states) — still apply in advance via the official eta.gov.lk portal, just no fee. Confirm your nationality is still on the free list before relying on this, since the list can be revised. Sri Lanka also offers a paid tourist visa for a continuous stay of up to 180 days. Apply specifically for the longer permission with Sri Lankan immigration.
Working remotely in Sri Lanka on tourist entry
Tourists working remotely must limit their activity to representing their overseas employer and promoting its services, according to a February 2026 Fragomen alert. A digital nomad visa also exists. Source
