Syria was a favourite of travellers before its civil war, with Damascus and Aleppo among the oldest cities in the world, and Palmyra and Crusader castles beyond them. More than a decade of war left infrastructure badly damaged. The country is now in a fragile and uncertain political transition, and although tourism is cautiously restarting at some historic sites, bombings and targeted violence still occur and conditions can change quickly.
