Mauritania is one of the least-visited countries in the world: vast, sparsely populated and hard to move around. For committed travellers it offers experiences with almost no crowds, including the iron-ore train across the Sahara and the ancient manuscript libraries of Chinguetti. Safety is regional. The capital and the coast are relatively calm, while desert areas towards the Malian border carry a serious risk from extremist activity and need specialist local guidance. Costs are very low and so is the quality of infrastructure. Arabic and French dominate, with very little English. This is a Saharan adventure for the cooler months from November to March, not a base.
