Ecuador combines dollarized currency stability with exceptionally low daily living expenses across accommodation and food. Base costs remain minimal for remote workers choosing cultural hubs like Cuenca or Loja, where local market produce and dining are extremely inexpensive.

Score is based off objective cost-of-living data with World Bank and C2ER Cost of Living Index. The limitation of this data is that it tracks spending of locals, which will be far less than travelers. We applied a nomad-realistic monthly cost estimate to make the amount more accurate. World Bank figures reflect national average consumption, which can run high in countries with large wealth gaps (e.g. the US) — the nomad estimate aims to correct for this. Likewise, lower CoL countries will have very low local spending figures, and will not reflect the spending patterns of travelers or nomads.

Ecuador has a genuinely mixed safety picture: Cuenca and the Andean highlands are comparatively calm and popular with nomads, while Guayaquil and parts of Quito have seen a rise in violent crime, including robbery and kidnapping risk, in recent years; sticking to well-established nomad areas and avoiding travel after dark matters more here than in most countries on this list.

Coastal safety has become a real consideration in recent years, so it's worth checking current conditions before basing near Guayaquil.
